Pollination

Pollination is the transfer of pollen from an anther to a stigma in flowering plants, or to an ovule in seed plants without flowers. It enables fertilization by bringing male reproductive cells to the female reproductive structures.

Anther: The flower structure that produces and releases pollen. Pollen begins its journey here in flowering plants.
Flower: The reproductive structure of flowering plants, typically containing organs that produce pollen and ovules. Its reproductive organs define the pollen-transfer route in flowering plants.
Animal pollination: Pollen transfer mediated by animals that visit flowers or other pollen-bearing structures. Animals carry pollen between plants while feeding, gathering materials, or seeking mates.
Plant reproduction: The biological processes by which plants produce offspring, sexually or asexually. Pollination is a transfer stage within sexual reproduction in seed plants.
Fertilization: The fusion of reproductive cells to form a zygote. Pollination transfers pollen; fertilization is the later fusion of gametes.
Stigma: The receptive surface of a flower's carpel where pollen can land and germinate. Successful pollination in flowering plants requires pollen to reach this surface.
Pollen grain: A microscopic structure containing the male gametophyte of seed plants. This is the transferable unit carried between reproductive structures.
Wind pollination: Pollen transfer by air currents rather than animal carriers. Wind carries pollen from exposed reproductive structures to receptive ones.
Seed dispersal: The movement of seeds away from the parent plant by animals, wind, water, or other means. Successful pollination can lead to seeds that later disperse and establish new plants.
Asexual reproduction in plants: Plant reproduction that produces offspring without the fusion of gametes. It can produce offspring without pollen transfer or fertilization.
