Pollinator garden

A pollinator garden is a planting designed to provide food or habitat for pollinating animals. It typically combines flowering plants with features such as nesting sites or shelter.

Native plant: A plant that occurs naturally in a particular region without human introduction. Locally adapted plants often provide familiar food and habitat for native pollinators.
Bee lawn: A lawn managed with low-growing flowering plants to provide forage for bees. It adapts pollinator planting to spaces otherwise kept as conventional turf.
Ornamental garden: A garden designed primarily for visual display rather than food production or ecological function. A pollinator garden selects and manages plants for animal resources as well as appearance.
Monarch butterfly: A migratory butterfly native to the Americas, whose caterpillars feed on milkweeds. Its life cycle shows why gardens may need host plants as well as nectar flowers.
Nectar: A sugar-rich liquid produced by flowers and some other plant structures. Many adult pollinators use floral nectar as an energy source.
Container garden: A planting grown in pots or other movable containers rather than directly in the ground. Containers can supply flowers where soil, space, or access to a yard is limited.
Monoculture: The cultivation of a single crop or plant species over a given area. A single-species planting usually offers less varied and less continuous forage than diverse gardens.
Milkweed: A group of plants in the genus Asclepias that serve as host plants for monarch caterpillars. Milkweed supports monarch development, but appropriate species depend on region and site.
Pollen: A plant’s pollen grains carry the male reproductive cells of seed plants. Bees and other animals collect pollen, which supplies protein and other nutrients.
Rain garden: A shallow planted depression that captures and filters runoff from roofs and paved surfaces. Its moisture-tolerant flowers can combine stormwater management with pollinator forage.
