Polyamory

Polyamory is the practice or capacity of having multiple romantic relationships at the same time, with the knowledge and consent of everyone involved. It is a form of consensual non-monogamy.

Consensual non-monogamy: Relationship arrangements in which everyone involved agrees that romantic or sexual relationships may extend beyond a dyad. Polyamory is one form of this broader relationship category.
Relationship agreement: An explicit understanding between partners about expectations, boundaries, and responsibilities. Partners may use agreements to make expectations across multiple relationships clear.
Swinging: A consensual non-monogamous practice centered primarily on partnered sexual activity with others, often socially. It is commonly distinguished from polyamory by its emphasis on sexual rather than ongoing romantic relationships.
Morning Glory Zell-Ravenheart: An American neopagan writer who helped popularize the word “polyamory” in the early 1990s. Her writing helped give the emerging relationship practice a widely used name.
Informed consent: Voluntary agreement based on relevant information and freedom from coercion. Knowledge and consent distinguish polyamory from deception or unilateral infidelity.
Boundary (interpersonal): A limit a person sets around their own participation, access, or emotional and physical well-being. Boundaries can guide conduct without controlling another person’s independent choices.
Open relationship: A relationship in which partners agree that sexual or romantic connections outside the partnership are permitted. The label is broader and may describe arrangements that do not involve multiple romantic relationships.
Polyamory: The New Love Without Limits: A 1992 book by Deborah Anapol presenting polyamory as a relationship approach and social movement. Anapol’s book helped introduce and frame polyamory for a broad readership.
Relationship anarchy: An approach to relationships that resists ranking or prescribing bonds by conventional categories. Some polyamorous people use it to shape agreements without a fixed hierarchy.
Jealousy: An emotional response to a perceived threat to a valued relationship or bond. Naming jealousy can help partners discuss insecurity and unmet needs without treating it as proof of failure.
