Knowra Polyethylene Polyethylene Polyethylene is a thermoplastic polymer made by joining ethylene molecules into long chains. Its low cost, chemical resistance, and tunable flexibility make it one of the most widely used plastics.
Ethylene : Ethylene is a two-carbon hydrocarbon with a carbon–carbon double bond and the formula C₂H₄. Its double bond opens during polymerization, linking ethylene units into polyethylene chains.
Ziegler–Natta catalyst : A Ziegler–Natta catalyst is a transition-metal catalyst system used to polymerize olefins with controlled chain structure. It enabled efficient polyethylene production with controlled branching and molecular architecture.
Low-density polyethylene : Low-density polyethylene is a highly branched polyethylene grade with relatively low density and flexible, tough properties. Its flexibility makes it useful for films, bags, and squeezable packaging.
Polypropylene : Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer made from propylene, valued for low density, chemical resistance, and heat tolerance. It competes with polyethylene in packaging and containers, with greater heat resistance but different toughness.
Plastic pollution : Plastic pollution is the accumulation of plastic materials in environments where they can harm ecosystems and organisms. Discarded polyethylene packaging is a substantial contributor to persistent plastic litter.
Addition polymerization : Addition polymerization joins unsaturated monomers into a polymer without releasing small-molecule byproducts. It describes the chain-forming reaction that converts ethylene into polyethylene.
Phillips catalyst : The Phillips catalyst is a chromium-based catalyst used commercially to polymerize ethylene. It is a major industrial route to polyethylene, especially high-density grades.
High-density polyethylene : High-density polyethylene is a relatively linear polyethylene grade with high crystallinity, strength, and chemical resistance. Its stiffness and durability suit containers, pipes, and household goods.
Polyvinyl chloride : Polyvinyl chloride is a thermoplastic polymer made from vinyl chloride, produced in rigid and flexible forms. It competes with polyethylene in pipes and construction, while differing in chlorine content and processing needs.
Mechanical recycling : Mechanical recycling processes used plastics through physical operations such as sorting, washing, and remelting. Polyethylene can be remelted, but contamination and repeated processing can reduce material quality.
