Polymer physics

Polymer physics studies how long molecular chains behave, move, and respond to forces, temperature, and surrounding conditions. It connects chain-level structure to bulk properties such as elasticity, viscosity, and phase behavior.

Random walk: A sequence of steps whose directions or outcomes are governed by chance. An ideal polymer chain can be modeled as a random walk through space.
Polymer: A molecule composed of many covalently connected repeating or related units. Polymer physics takes these long molecules as its central objects.
Polymer rheology: The study of how polymeric fluids and materials deform and flow. Chain relaxation and entanglement determine viscosity and elastic response during flow.
Ideal chain: A polymer-chain model whose segments have no excluded-volume interactions and whose large-scale statistics follow a random walk. It is the baseline against which real-chain swelling is measured.
Radius of gyration: A measure of the spatial extent of a system of particles around its center of mass. It quantifies the typical size of a polymer coil.
Degree of polymerization: The number of monomer units in a polymer chain. Chain length strongly affects coil size, entanglement, and relaxation.
Polymer crystallization: The formation of ordered crystalline regions within polymer materials. Chain folding and mobility control crystallization and resulting material properties.
Self-avoiding walk: A random walk that cannot revisit a previously occupied site. It models excluded-volume effects absent from the ideal-chain picture.
Polymer elasticity: The reversible deformation of polymer materials under applied forces. A chain’s entropy changes when stretching, producing an entropic restoring force.
Persistence length: A length scale over which a polymer’s direction remains correlated along its contour. It distinguishes flexible chains from stiff ones at different scales.
