Polynomial equation

A mathematical equation in which one or more expressions are polynomials. Its solutions are values of the variables that make the two sides equal.

Polynomial: An expression formed from variables and coefficients using addition, subtraction, and nonnegative integer powers. Polynomial equations are built by setting polynomial expressions equal.
Linear equation: An equation whose variable terms have degree at most one. Its single-variable form is the simplest nonconstant polynomial equation to solve.
Polynomial interpolation: The construction of a polynomial that passes through a specified set of data points. Interpolation determines unknown polynomial coefficients by solving simultaneous equations.
Radical equation: An equation containing variables inside one or more radical expressions. Its radical structure can require transformations that introduce extraneous solutions.
Degree of a polynomial: The highest power of the variable with a nonzero coefficient in a polynomial. The degree bounds the number of roots and classifies the equation's complexity.
Quadratic equation: An equation in one variable whose highest power is two. Completing the square and the quadratic formula solve this important degree-two case.
Polynomial system: A set of equations in which each equation is polynomial in the same variables. Several polynomial constraints form a system whose solutions satisfy them all.
Exponential equation: An equation in which a variable occurs in an exponent. Exponential growth generally cannot be treated as polynomial growth.
Root of a polynomial: A value of the variable at which a polynomial evaluates to zero. Solving an equation set to zero means finding its polynomial's roots.
Cubic equation: An equation in one variable whose highest power is three. Its general solution requires methods beyond those used for linear and quadratic equations.
