Polysaccharide

A carbohydrate polymer composed of many monosaccharide units linked by glycosidic bonds. Its chain length, branching, and linkage types shape its properties and biological roles.

Monosaccharide: A simple sugar unit that cannot be hydrolyzed into a smaller carbohydrate. Polysaccharides are assembled from repeated monosaccharide units.
Starch: A plant storage carbohydrate composed mainly of amylose and amylopectin. Starch is a major glucose-storage polysaccharide in plants and a dietary energy source.
Amylose: A mostly unbranched starch component made of α(1→4)-linked glucose. Its helical chains contrast with the branched architecture of amylopectin.
Cellulose: A linear polymer of β(1→4)-linked glucose that forms plant cell walls. Cellulose’s β linkages produce structural fibers unlike starch’s energy-storage forms.
Glycosidic bond: A covalent bond that connects a sugar’s anomeric carbon to another group, often another sugar. These bonds join the monosaccharides into polysaccharide chains.
Glycogen: A highly branched glucose polymer used for energy storage in animals and fungi. Its dense branching enables rapid glucose mobilization in animal tissues.
Amylopectin: A branched starch component with α(1→4) chains and α(1→6) branch points. Branching creates many chain ends for enzyme access during starch breakdown.
Inulin: A plant storage polysaccharide composed mainly of fructose units. It shows that polysaccharides need not be built from glucose alone.
Anomer: One of two stereoisomers of a cyclic sugar that differ at the anomeric carbon. Anomeric configuration helps determine a polysaccharide’s linkage geometry.
Chitin: A structural polymer of N-acetylglucosamine found in arthropod exoskeletons and fungal cell walls. It provides structural support in organisms that do not use cellulose as their main structural polymer.
