Polytrauma

Polytrauma is a condition involving multiple traumatic injuries, often across different body regions, that together pose a serious threat to life or function.

Hemorrhagic shock: A life-threatening state in which severe blood loss prevents adequate oxygen delivery to tissues. Bleeding from multiple injuries can rapidly reduce circulating blood volume and organ perfusion.
Trauma: Physical injury caused by an external force, including blunt, penetrating, and thermal injury. Polytrauma is a severe pattern within the broader category of traumatic injury.
Advanced Trauma Life Support: A structured approach to the initial assessment and treatment of injured patients. Its primary survey prioritizes immediately life-threatening problems in complex injuries.
Multiple trauma: The presence of more than one traumatic injury, without a single universal severity threshold. It is often used as a synonym, though some definitions reserve polytrauma for severe combined injuries.
Post-traumatic stress disorder: A mental disorder that can develop after exposure to traumatic events and involves persistent symptoms. Severe injury and its treatment can be followed by lasting trauma-related psychological symptoms.
Trauma triad of death: The reinforcing combination of hypothermia, acidosis, and coagulopathy in severe trauma. These complications can amplify bleeding and worsen outcomes in severely injured patients.
Blunt trauma: Injury caused by impact or acceleration without an object penetrating the body. High-energy collisions and falls can produce multiple internal injuries without obvious wounds.
Trauma team: A coordinated group of clinicians trained to assess and treat serious injuries rapidly. Polytrauma care requires simultaneous evaluation by clinicians with complementary expertise.
Major trauma: An injury or combination of injuries severe enough to create substantial risk of death or disability. The terms overlap, but major trauma can describe one life-threatening injury rather than multiple injuries.
Traumatic brain injury: A disruption of brain function caused by an external mechanical force. It is a common, potentially disabling component of polytrauma and can complicate recovery.
