Polyvinyl alcohol

Polyvinyl alcohol is a water-soluble synthetic polymer made by hydrolyzing polyvinyl acetate. Its solubility and film-forming ability make it useful in films, adhesives, and coatings.

Polyvinyl acetate: A synthetic polymer whose repeating units carry acetate groups and whose hydrolysis produces polyvinyl alcohol. Removing acetate groups from this polymer creates PVA’s hydroxyl-rich structure.
Water-soluble film: A thin polymer sheet designed to dissolve or disperse in water. PVA forms films used for packaging that dissolves during use.
Polyvinyl butyral: A resin made from polyvinyl alcohol and butyraldehyde, valued for adhesion and toughness. Unlike water-soluble PVA, this related resin is water-resistant and bonds glass in laminated safety glazing.
Hydrolysis: A chemical reaction that breaks a bond through reaction with water. PVA is produced when hydrolysis converts acetate groups in polyvinyl acetate.
Degree of hydrolysis: The fraction of acetate groups converted to hydroxyl groups during polymer hydrolysis. It controls PVA’s balance of water solubility, crystallinity, and chemical resistance.
Laundry detergent pod: A premeasured detergent dose enclosed in a water-soluble film. PVA commonly forms the film that releases detergent in wash water.
Polyethylene: A widely used thermoplastic made from ethylene, generally resistant to water and many chemicals. Its water resistance contrasts with PVA’s ability to dissolve in water.
Polymerization: A chemical process that joins small molecules into polymer chains or networks. The vinyl-based chain structure originates in polymerization before acetate groups are hydrolyzed.
Polymer crystallinity: The degree to which polymer chains pack into ordered regions within a material. Hydrogen bonding lets PVA chains form ordered regions that resist dissolution.
Paper sizing: Treatment that changes paper’s resistance to liquid penetration and improves surface properties. PVA coats paper fibers to improve strength and control ink absorption.
