Pōmare II

Pōmare II was king of Tahiti from 1803 to 1821 and the second ruler of the Pōmare dynasty. His conversion to Christianity helped establish Protestantism in the kingdom.

Pōmare I: The founder of Tahiti’s Pōmare dynasty, who united much of the island under his rule. His father built the political power Pōmare II inherited.
London Missionary Society: A British Protestant missionary organization founded in 1795 to spread Christianity overseas. Its missionaries supplied the teachers and institutional support behind Pōmare II’s conversion.
Pōmare dynasty: A royal family that ruled Tahiti and established the island’s kingdom in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Pōmare II’s reign continued the dynasty’s effort to consolidate power across Tahiti.

Code of Pomare: A set of laws issued in Tahiti under Pōmare II that incorporated Christian principles into governance. It translated the king’s religious transformation into rules for the kingdom.
