Pōmare IV

Pōmare IV was Queen of Tahiti from 1827 to 1877. Her reign included the establishment of a French protectorate over Tahiti in 1842.

Pōmare II: Tahitian king who consolidated the Pōmare dynasty and adopted Christianity before his death in 1821. His death left a young heir and brought Pōmare IV’s mother, Aimata, into power.
French protectorate of Tahiti: A political arrangement established in 1842 under which France controlled Tahiti’s foreign relations while retaining the Pōmare monarchy. It was the defining change in sovereignty during Pōmare IV’s reign.
Aimata Pōmare: The personal name of Pōmare IV, used before and during her reign as queen of Tahiti. She ruled under this name before becoming widely known by her dynastic title.

Pōmare dynasty: The royal family that ruled Tahiti and neighboring islands during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Pōmare IV inherited a kingdom whose authority rested on this family’s alliances and legitimacy.
French–Tahitian War: A conflict from 1844 to 1847 between French forces and Tahitian supporters of Queen Pōmare IV. The queen’s resistance to French control became an armed struggle during her exile.
