Pomerania

Pomerania is a historic region along the southern Baltic coast, divided over time among duchies and neighboring states. Its lands now lie chiefly in Germany and Poland.

Pomeranians: A West Slavic people historically associated with the southern Baltic coast. Their settlement gave the region its name and an early Slavic character.
Duchy of Pomerania: A medieval and early modern duchy ruled by the House of Griffin in parts of Pomerania. Its partitions and reunifications formed the region’s central political structure for centuries.
Baltic Sea: A brackish inland sea in northern Europe, connected to the North Sea by narrow Danish straits. Its southern coastline gives Pomerania its geographic shape and maritime orientation.

Oder: A river in Central Europe that flows north to the Baltic Sea through Poland and Germany. The Oder became a major boundary between German and Polish parts of Pomerania.
Prussian Pomerania: The territories of historic Pomerania incorporated into the Kingdom of Prussia. Prussian rule consolidated much of western and central Pomerania before 1945.
Gdańsk: A Polish Baltic port city historically known in German as Danzig. Its changing political status links Pomeranian history to Polish, German, and Baltic affairs.
