Popcorn is a type of maize with kernels that expand and burst when heated. The resulting flakes are commonly eaten as a snack.

Pericarp: The outer covering of a seed or fruit; in popcorn, this tough layer holds pressure inside the kernel. Its intact casing traps steam until pressure ruptures the kernel.
