Pope Honorius III

Pope from 1216 to 1227, Honorius III supported the mendicant orders and tried to organize a crusade to recover Jerusalem.

Francis of Assisi: Italian friar who founded the Franciscan movement and became a central figure in medieval Christianity. Honorius approved the Franciscan Rule in 1223, giving the order formal papal recognition.
Fifth Crusade: A campaign from 1217 to 1221 that attacked the Ayyubid-held port of Damietta in Egypt. Honorius promoted the expedition as the main campaign to recover Jerusalem during his pontificate.
