Pope Julius II

Pope from 1503 to 1513, Julius II strengthened papal rule in Italy and commissioned major Renaissance projects, including the rebuilding of St. Peter’s Basilica and Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling.

New Saint Peter’s Basilica: The Renaissance basilica built in Rome from 1506 to 1626 on the site of Old St. Peter’s. Julius II initiated its rebuilding and laid its foundation stone in 1506.
Papal States: A group of territories in central Italy ruled directly by the pope until their incorporation into Italy in 1870. Julius II used military and diplomatic campaigns to recover and expand these lands.
Giuliano della Rovere: The birth name of Pope Julius II, who was born in 1443 and belonged to the della Rovere family. His rise from this family’s ecclesiastical network shaped his path to the papacy.
