Pope Nicholas I

Pope from 858 to 867, Nicholas I asserted Roman authority in disputes over church jurisdiction and helped strengthen the medieval papacy.

Photian Schism: A ninth-century conflict between Rome and Constantinople over the patriarchate of Constantinople and ecclesiastical authority. Nicholas rejected Photius’s appointment as patriarch, intensifying Rome’s conflict with Constantinople.
Lothair II: King of Lotharingia from 855 to 869, whose effort to end his marriage became a major church dispute. Nicholas opposed the annulment of Lothair’s marriage to Theutberga.

Pseudo-Isidorian Decretals: A ninth-century collection of forged papal letters and church canons that supported episcopal protections and papal authority. These forged texts circulated during Nicholas’s pontificate and echoed arguments for protecting bishops from secular control.
Waldrada: A noblewoman and Lothair II’s partner, whom he sought to marry after pursuing an annulment. Nicholas’s condemnation of Lothair’s marriage plans directly affected Waldrada’s position.
