Pope Paschal II

Pope from 1099 to 1118, born Ranierius, whose pontificate was marked by conflict with the Holy Roman Empire over episcopal appointments and lay investiture.

Investiture Controversy: A conflict over whether secular rulers could appoint bishops and other church officials. Paschal’s confrontation with Henry V became a decisive phase of this broader struggle.
