Pope Pius IX

Pope from 1846 to 1878, Pius IX led the Catholic Church through Italian unification, defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, and convened the First Vatican Council.

Italian unification: The nineteenth-century political movement that unified the Italian states into one kingdom. The unification process ended papal rule over most of central Italy.
