Pope Pius V

Pope Pius V, born Antonio Ghislieri, led the Catholic Church from 1566 to 1572 and was canonized in 1712. His pontificate enforced Catholic reform and helped organize the alliance that defeated the Ottoman fleet at Lepanto.

Battle of Lepanto: A 1571 naval battle in which a Holy League fleet defeated the Ottoman fleet in the Gulf of Patras. Pius V helped organize the Holy League whose victory became the defining military event of his pontificate.
