Popular Front

A political alliance of left-wing parties formed in several countries during the 1930s to oppose fascism. The best-known examples were in France and Spain.

Communist International: An international organization founded in 1919 to coordinate communist parties and promote world revolution. Its 1935 shift toward cooperation with non-communist leftists helped launch Popular Front strategy.
Popular Front (France): A French coalition of left-wing parties that governed from 1936 to 1938. It brought socialists, radicals, and communists into a mass electoral alliance.
Electoral coalition: An alliance of political parties formed to compete jointly in an election or govern together. Popular Fronts coordinated parties that otherwise retained separate identities and programs.
National Bloc: A conservative French electoral coalition that governed from 1919 to 1924. Its conservative program contrasts with the French Popular Front's left-wing coalition.
Seventh World Congress of the Communist International: The 1935 congress that endorsed broad alliances against fascism and war. Its resolutions formalized the united-front strategy behind the Popular Front.
Popular Front (Spain): A Spanish electoral coalition of left-wing parties that won the February 1936 general election. Its victory preceded the military uprising that began the Spanish Civil War.
French legislative election, 1936: The French election in which the Popular Front won a majority in the Chamber of Deputies. Its victory brought Léon Blum's government to power.
Nationalist faction (Spanish Civil War): The coalition of military rebels and right-wing forces that fought Spain's Republican government from 1936 to 1939. It was the armed opponent of the Spanish Popular Front and its Republican allies.
United Front: A political strategy in which organizations with different aims cooperate around shared immediate goals. Popular Fronts extended this coalition logic beyond working-class parties to include liberals.
Popular Front (Chile): A Chilean center-left coalition that governed from 1938 to 1941. It shows the Popular Front strategy extending beyond Europe.
