Population control

Population control is the use of government or institutional policies to influence population size or growth, through measures affecting births, deaths, or migration.

Family planning: Programs and practices that help people decide whether and when to have children. Contraception and reproductive-health services can alter birth rates without prescribing a target family size.
Reproductive rights: Rights concerning decisions about reproduction, pregnancy, contraception, and access to reproductive health care. Population policies are judged partly by whether they protect or restrict reproductive autonomy.
Thomas Malthus: An English cleric and political economist whose 1798 essay argued that population tends to outgrow food supply. His argument helped frame population growth as a political problem requiring restraint.
Coercive population control: Population policy that uses force, penalties, or compulsion to influence reproduction or family size. It represents the most direct and rights-violating form of population control.
One-child policy: China’s policy, introduced in 1979, that restricted most couples to one child for several decades. It is a prominent example of direct state limits on family size.
Sex-selective abortion: Abortion sought because a fetus is identified as having a particular sex. Son preference and fertility limits have contributed to sex imbalances in some populations.
Malthusianism: The view that population growth tends to exceed available resources and produce scarcity or crisis. It supplied a lasting rationale for policies intended to curb population growth.
Voluntary sterilization: A person’s freely chosen medical procedure that permanently prevents reproduction. Informed, voluntary choice differs fundamentally from sterilization imposed to meet population targets.
Pronatalism: Policies and beliefs that encourage people to have more children. It pursues population growth rather than limiting it.
Population ageing: A rise in the median age of a population, commonly driven by lower fertility and longer life expectancy. Sustained fertility restrictions can accelerate the shift toward an older population.
