Population exchange between Greece and Turkey

The compulsory transfer of Orthodox Christians from Turkey to Greece and Muslims from Greece to Turkey, formalized by a 1923 convention. It displaced roughly 1.5 million people and made religious identity the basis of migration and citizenship.
