Porphyroblast

A porphyroblast is a large mineral crystal that grew within a finer-grained metamorphic rock. Its growth can preserve evidence of the rock’s changing pressure, temperature, and deformation.

Metamorphic Reaction: A chemical reaction among minerals caused by changing conditions in a metamorphic rock. Reactions between minerals commonly supply the material from which a porphyroblast grows.
Metamorphic Rock: Rock transformed in the solid state by changes in temperature, pressure, or chemically active fluids. Porphyroblasts form as part of mineral changes within metamorphic rocks.
Porphyroblast Rotation: The rotation of a growing or rigid porphyroblast relative to its surrounding rock fabric. Its interpretation can help explain spiral inclusion trails, though such trails have multiple possible origins.
Snowball Garnet: A garnet porphyroblast containing curved inclusion trails that resemble a spiral. Its trail geometry has been used to infer rotation and deformation during crystal growth.
Porphyroblast-Matrix Relation: The textural relationship between a porphyroblast and the finer-grained minerals surrounding it. Their mutual arrangement records whether crystal growth preceded, accompanied, or followed deformation.
Porphyritic Texture: A rock texture in which larger crystals are set in a finer-grained groundmass, commonly in igneous rocks. The shared size contrast can obscure the distinction between metamorphic growth and igneous crystallization.
Metamorphic Pressure-Temperature-Time Path: A reconstruction of how a rock's pressure and temperature changed through time during metamorphism. Mineral growth zones and inclusions can constrain stages along this path.
Staurolite: An iron- and aluminum-rich silicate mineral characteristic of many medium-grade metamorphic rocks. Staurolite commonly forms conspicuous porphyroblasts in pelitic rocks.
Inclusion Trail: A pattern of mineral inclusions preserved inside a larger crystal. Curved or truncated trails can preserve earlier rock fabrics as a porphyroblast grows.
Porphyroclast: A pre-existing mineral grain that remains relatively large while a rock deforms around it. Unlike a porphyroblast, a porphyroclast is an inherited grain rather than a crystal grown during metamorphism.
