Portmanteau

A word formed by blending parts of two or more words and combining their meanings. Its form and meaning draw on the source words at once.

Morphology: The study of how words are formed from meaningful units and how their forms vary. Portmanteaus are a word-formation pattern within morphology.
Brunch: A meal eaten late in the morning that combines breakfast and lunch. Its form and meal concept combine parts of “breakfast” and “lunch.”
Lewis Carroll: The English writer and mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, best known by his pen name. Carroll popularized “portmanteau” for blended words in his explanation of “Jabberwocky.”
Acronym: A word formed from the initial letters or parts of a series of words. Acronyms combine initials, not truncated word parts and their meanings.
Morpheme: The smallest linguistic unit that carries meaning or grammatical function. Blended fragments may be morphemes, though many are only parts of morphemes.
Smog: Air pollution consisting chiefly of smoke or other particulates and fog-like haze. The word joins “smoke” and “fog” for a hybrid phenomenon.

Back-formation: The creation of a new word by removing a real or supposed affix from an existing word. Back-formation derives a word by subtraction rather than blending sources.
Clipping: A word-formation process that shortens a word without changing its meaning or grammatical category. Portmanteaus often clip their source words before combining them.
Motel: A roadside hotel designed for motorists, typically with rooms accessible from a parking area. “Motel” blends “motor” and “hotel” into a name for a specific kind of lodging.
