Portuguese Cortes

The Portuguese Cortes was a medieval assembly in which clergy, nobles, and representatives of towns met with the monarch to address matters of governance, taxation, and law.

Cortes of Leiria (1254): A Portuguese Cortes convened by Afonso III at Leiria in 1254, notable for including representatives of towns. Its urban delegates illustrate how town representation entered the assembly.
Estates of the realm: A social and political system that organized a society into legally distinct groups, often clergy, nobility, and commoners. The Cortes represented these broad estates rather than an electorate of equal citizens.
