Portuguese literature

Portuguese literature is the literary tradition of Portugal, written primarily in Portuguese and encompassing poetry, drama, prose, and other forms.

The Lusiads: An epic poem by Luís de Camões, published in 1572, recounting Portuguese voyages and celebrating national history. Camões’s epic became a lasting national touchstone and a landmark of Renaissance verse.
Galician-Portuguese lyric: A medieval poetic tradition in the Galician-Portuguese language, preserved in songbooks from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. It supplies the earliest major body of lyric poetry shared by the region’s literary history.
Luís de Camões: A sixteenth-century Portuguese poet best known for the epic The Lusiads and his sonnets. His poetry became a central measure of Portuguese literary achievement.
Brazilian literature: The literary tradition of Brazil, written primarily in Brazilian Portuguese and shaped by the country’s distinct history and cultures. Shared language connects the traditions, while colonial history and later national development distinguish them.
