Portuguese monarchy

The hereditary kingship that governed Portugal from its foundation in the twelfth century until the 1910 revolution established a republic.

County of Portugal: A medieval county in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula that became the foundation of the Kingdom of Portugal. Its rulers’ bid for independence created the kingdom governed by the monarchy.
Kingdom of Portugal: A sovereign state in western Iberia that existed from the twelfth century until the establishment of the Portuguese Republic. The monarchy was the kingdom’s central institution of sovereignty.
Portuguese Empire: A global empire built by Portugal from the fifteenth century through overseas exploration, conquest, trade, and settlement. Royal sponsorship and imperial revenues expanded the monarchy’s reach beyond Europe.
Afonso III of Portugal: King of Portugal from 1248 to 1279, whose reign completed the conquest of the Algarve. His reign helped establish the kingdom’s territorial form under the crown.
Portuguese First Republic: The republican regime established in Portugal after the 1910 revolution and lasting until the 1926 military coup. It replaced hereditary sovereignty with a republic.
Afonso I of Portugal: The first king of Portugal, who secured recognition of the kingdom in the twelfth century. His reign marks the monarchy’s emergence as a distinct Portuguese institution.
Cortes of Portugal: The Portuguese representative assembly of estates, convened by monarchs to advise and address matters of taxation and law. The Cortes offered a formal, though intermittent, arena for negotiating royal policy.
Portuguese Restoration War: The war from 1640 to 1668 that secured Portugal’s independence from Habsburg Spain. Its outcome restored an independent Portuguese crown under the House of Braganza.
John I of Portugal: The first king of Portugal from the House of Aviz, ruling from 1385 to 1433. His accession resolved the succession crisis and founded a durable dynasty.
Absolute monarchy: A system of government in which a monarch holds extensive sovereign power with few constitutional limits. It contrasts with the constitutional limits that shaped Portugal’s later kingship.
