Portuguese Restoration War

A war between Portugal and Spain from 1640 to 1668 that ended the Iberian Union and secured Portugal’s independence under the House of Braganza.

Portuguese Revolution of 1640: The December 1640 coup that ended Habsburg rule in Portugal and proclaimed John IV king. The uprising began the war and installed the dynasty Portugal fought to defend.
Iberian Union: The dynastic union of Portugal and Spain under Habsburg monarchs from 1580 to 1640. The war sought to end this union and restore a separate Portuguese crown.
John IV of Portugal: The first king of the House of Braganza, who ruled Portugal from 1640 to 1656. His accession gave the restoration movement a monarch and a durable political center.
