Possibilism

Possibilism holds that environments constrain human activity without determining it: people make choices among possibilities shaped by their surroundings.

Environmental determinism: The theory that physical environments directly determine human societies, cultures, and behavior. Possibilism rejects its claim that environmental conditions dictate social outcomes.
Paul Vidal de la Blache: A French geographer who developed possibilist ideas about human choices and environmental conditions. He gave possibilism its influential early formulation in human geography.
Genre de vie: A characteristic way of life through which a society organizes its activities in a particular environment. Vidal used this idea to describe how choices and practices shape regional adaptation.
