Post–Cold War era

The period following the Cold War’s end, especially after the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. It is marked by shifts in global power, international institutions, and security threats.

Dissolution of the Soviet Union: The 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union into fifteen independent states. It ended the superpower rivalry that had defined the preceding Cold War.
Gulf War: The 1990–1991 conflict in which a U.S.-led coalition expelled Iraqi forces from Kuwait. It displayed post-Cold War cooperation among major powers under United Nations authorization.
Cold War: The geopolitical rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union from the late 1940s to 1991. Its bipolar competition provides the clearest comparison for the era that followed.
United Nations Security Council: The United Nations body responsible for maintaining international peace and security, with five permanent members. Reduced superpower deadlock briefly widened the council's scope for collective action.
Post-Soviet states: The fifteen independent countries that emerged from the Soviet Union's dissolution in 1991. Their divergent political paths complicate any single account of the post-Soviet transition.

Partnership for Peace: A NATO program launched in 1994 to build security cooperation with European and Eurasian states. It offered a framework for relations with former Soviet-bloc countries outside NATO membership.
Democratic backsliding: The gradual weakening of democratic institutions, competition, and civil liberties within a political system. Its spread raises doubts about assumptions that post-Cold War democratization would endure.
