Post-communism

Post-communism is the political, economic, and social order that emerged in countries after communist rule ended, especially in Central and Eastern Europe. It encompasses diverse transitions rather than a single model.

Shock therapy: A rapid reform strategy that liberalizes prices, trade, and ownership while reducing state controls. Several post-communist governments used rapid liberalization to replace central planning with market allocation.
Polish Round Table Agreement: The 1989 agreement between Poland's communist government and opposition that enabled a negotiated political transition. It illustrates how post-communist change could begin through compromise rather than revolution.
Oligarchy: A system in which political power is concentrated in the hands of a small group. Unequal access to privatized assets helped powerful business groups gain political influence.
Post-Soviet states: The countries that emerged after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The category overlaps with post-communism but includes varied Soviet legacies and regional trajectories.
