Post-transition metal

A p-block metallic element with properties between those of transition metals and metalloids. Common examples include aluminum, tin, and lead.

p-block: The periodic-table region in which the highest-energy electrons occupy p orbitals. Post-transition metals occupy the metallic part of this block.
Aluminum: A lightweight, corrosion-resistant metallic element with atomic number 13. Its low density and oxide protection make it a major structural material.
Valence electron: An electron in an atom’s outer shell that can participate in chemical bonding. The outer s and p electrons govern much of these elements’ chemistry.
Alkali metal: An element in Group 1, excluding hydrogen, characterized by a single outer s electron. Alkali metals are more reactive and belong to the s-block rather than the p-block.
Periodic table: A tabular arrangement of chemical elements ordered by atomic number and recurring properties. Their placement lies to the right of transition metals and left of metalloids.
Tin: A malleable metallic element with atomic number 50, used in alloys and coatings. Its role in solder and tinplate illustrates practical uses of the group.
Inert pair effect: The tendency of heavier p-block elements to retain their outer ns² electrons in compounds. It helps explain why lower oxidation states become more stable down several group columns.
Poor metal: An older, informal name for metallic p-block elements with comparatively low melting points and hardness. This near-synonym emphasizes physical properties but has no universally standardized membership.
Metal: An element or material characterized by properties such as electrical conductivity, metallic bonding, and ductility. This broad class supplies the metallic side of the group’s defining comparison.
Lead: A dense, soft metallic element with atomic number 82 and significant toxicity. Its batteries and radiation shielding show both utility and health risks.
