Postterm pregnancy

A pregnancy that reaches 42 weeks of gestation or more, dated from the first day of the last menstrual period. It is distinct from late-term pregnancy, which spans 41 weeks through 41 weeks and 6 days.

Oligohydramnios: An abnormally low volume of amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus. Amniotic fluid can decline after term, increasing the risk of umbilical cord compression.
Gestational age: The duration of pregnancy, conventionally counted in weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period. The 42-week threshold defining postterm pregnancy depends on gestational-age calculation.
Cervical ripening: Changes to the cervix that soften, thin, and prepare it for labor. An unfavorable cervix may need ripening before induction can effectively start labor.
Late-term pregnancy: A pregnancy lasting from 41 weeks through 41 weeks and 6 days of gestation. It precedes postterm pregnancy and is often the point at which induction is discussed.
Meconium aspiration syndrome: A neonatal breathing disorder caused by inhaling meconium-stained fluid before or during birth. Fetal passage of meconium is more common in prolonged pregnancies and can complicate birth.
Naegele's rule: A method for estimating a due date by adding 280 days to the first day of the last menstrual period. It provides a traditional due-date estimate, though menstrual dates may be uncertain.
Bishop score: A clinical scoring system that estimates cervical readiness for labor induction. It helps clinicians choose an induction approach when delivery is planned.
Full-term pregnancy: A pregnancy from 39 weeks through 40 weeks and 6 days of gestation. It is the standard term interval, before late-term and postterm classifications.
Macrosomia: Excessive fetal size, commonly defined by birth weight thresholds that vary by guideline. Continued fetal growth can increase the chance of difficult vaginal birth and birth injury.
First-trimester ultrasound: An early pregnancy scan that can estimate gestational age using fetal measurements. Early ultrasound dating can reduce errors that might misclassify a pregnancy as postterm.
