Potassium manganate

Potassium manganate is the inorganic salt K₂MnO₄, containing manganese in the +6 oxidation state. Its green solutions can disproportionate into permanganate and manganese dioxide.

Manganate ion: The tetrahedral MnO₄²⁻ ion, in which manganese has oxidation state +6. This ion is the colored chemical unit in potassium manganate.
Potassium ion: The positively charged K⁺ ion formed when a potassium atom loses one electron. Two potassium ions balance the charge of each manganate ion in the salt.
Potassium permanganate production: Industrial and laboratory processes that convert manganese compounds into potassium permanganate. Potassium manganate is a key intermediate in several production routes.
Permanganate: The MnO₄⁻ ion, in which manganese has oxidation state +7. It is the oxidized, purple counterpart formed from green manganate.

Manganite ion: The MnO₃⁻ ion, containing manganese in the +3 oxidation state. Its lower oxidation state and different formula contrast with manganate.
Manganese dioxide: The inorganic compound MnO₂, a common manganese oxide with manganese in the +4 oxidation state. It is a product when manganate disproportionates in neutral or acidic solution.
Oxometalate: A metal-containing anion bonded to oxygen atoms, often with a high oxidation state. Manganate belongs to this broad family of oxygen-rich metal ions.
