Allied Control Council : The four-power body that governed Germany after its defeat in 1945. It was meant to coordinate the occupation policies the agreement assigned to the Allies.
Yalta Conference : The February 1945 meeting where the Soviet Union, the United States, and Britain discussed postwar Europe. Its decisions established commitments and disputes that the Potsdam talks revisited.
Joseph Stalin : The Soviet leader from the 1920s until his death in 1953. He represented the Soviet Union and pressed its security and territorial interests at Potsdam.
Treaty on the Final Settlement with Respect to Germany : The 1990 treaty that ended the postwar rights of the four Allied powers in Germany. It supplied the final settlement that the 1945 agreement had left open.
Four Ds : The goals of demilitarization, denazification, democratization, and decentralization for postwar Germany. These principles summarized the agreement’s intended transformation of German society and government.
