Povidone-iodine

Povidone-iodine is a complex of iodine and the polymer povidone that releases free iodine gradually. It is used as a broad-spectrum antiseptic on skin, wounds, and mucous membranes.

Molecular iodine: Molecular iodine is the diatomic form of elemental iodine, written I₂, and a potent antimicrobial agent. Released iodine supplies much of povidone-iodine’s antimicrobial activity.
Surgical skin preparation: Surgical skin preparation is the cleansing and antiseptic treatment of skin before an operation or invasive procedure. Povidone-iodine solutions are used to reduce skin microorganisms before procedures.
Chlorhexidine: Chlorhexidine is a cationic antiseptic used on skin and in some oral-care products. It is a common alternative for skin antisepsis, with different activity and safety constraints.
Contact dermatitis: Contact dermatitis is an inflammatory skin reaction caused by direct exposure to an irritating or allergenic substance. Povidone-iodine can irritate skin or provoke contact reactions in some people.
Disinfection: Disinfection reduces many harmful microorganisms on inanimate objects but does not necessarily destroy bacterial spores. Povidone-iodine is applied to living tissue, unlike disinfectants intended for surfaces.
Povidone: Povidone is a water-soluble synthetic polymer also known as polyvinylpyrrolidone. This polymer complexes with iodine and helps make it water-dispersible.
Wound care: Wound care is the assessment and treatment of damaged tissue to support healing and prevent complications. Povidone-iodine may be used as a topical antiseptic, depending on wound and product guidance.
Alcohol-based antiseptic: An alcohol-based antiseptic uses ethanol or isopropanol to rapidly reduce microorganisms on skin. Alcohol acts quickly and evaporates, unlike iodine released from a povidone complex.
Iodine allergy: Iodine allergy is a commonly used but medically imprecise label for reactions attributed to iodine-containing products. Reactions to povidone-iodine are not evidence of allergy to elemental iodine itself.
Sterilization: Sterilization is a validated process that eliminates all forms of microbial life, including bacterial spores. Antiseptic treatment reduces microbial burden but does not make tissue sterile.
