Power cable

A power cable is an insulated assembly of conductors that carries electrical energy between a source and equipment or between points in a distribution system.

Electrical conductor: A material or component that permits electric charge to flow. Metal conductors form the paths that carry current through a power cable.
Electric current: The rate at which electric charge flows through a conductor. Current through the cable creates resistive heating that its conductor must safely withstand.
Underground power cable: A power cable installed below ground to transmit or distribute electricity. Its insulation and protective construction must suit burial conditions and heat dissipation.
Coaxial cable: A cable with a central conductor surrounded by insulation and a concentric outer conductor. Coaxial cable usually carries high-frequency signals rather than substantial electrical power.
Electrical insulation: Material that resists electric current and separates conductors from each other or their surroundings. Insulation prevents cable conductors from contacting each other or exposed surfaces.
Voltage: The electric potential difference between two points. Voltage determines the electrical stress imposed on a cable's insulation.
Submarine power cable: A power cable designed to transmit electricity across or beneath bodies of water. Its construction protects conductors from water ingress, pressure, and seabed damage.
Twisted pair: A pair of insulated conductors twisted together to reduce electromagnetic interference. Twisted pair typically carries communication signals, unlike power cables designed for energy delivery.
Cable sheath: An outer layer that encloses and protects a cable core. A cable sheath adds environmental and mechanical protection beyond conductor insulation.
Ohm's law: The relation between voltage, current, and resistance in an electrical circuit. It relates cable resistance to voltage drop and current under specified conditions.
