Knowra Power outage Power outage A power outage is an interruption of electrical service affecting part or all of an electricity network. It can result from equipment failure, damage, operational decisions, or insufficient supply.
Electrical grid : An interconnected system that generates, transmits, and distributes electricity to users. An outage is a service interruption within this network or one of its sections.
Northeast blackout of 2003 : A widespread power outage across parts of the northeastern United States and Ontario on August 14, 2003. It illustrates how a local transmission problem and failed situational awareness can cascade across a regional grid.
Emergency power system : Equipment that supplies electricity when the normal power source fails. Hospitals and other critical facilities use backup systems to maintain essential services during outages.
Critical infrastructure : Systems and assets whose disruption would seriously affect public safety, the economy, or essential services. Electricity loss can impair water, communications, transport, healthcare, and other dependent systems.
Rolling blackout : A planned, rotating interruption of electricity service across different areas to reduce demand. Unlike an unplanned outage, it deliberately shifts which customers lose service.
Fault (power engineering) : An abnormal electrical condition, such as a short circuit, that disrupts power-system operation. Faults can trigger protective equipment to isolate parts of the grid.
India blackout of 2012 : A major electricity outage affecting northern, eastern, and northeastern India on July 30 and 31, 2012. It demonstrates how overloaded interconnected grids can fail across a vast region.
Uninterruptible power supply : A device that provides short-term backup power and often conditions electricity for connected equipment. It bridges brief interruptions and gives sensitive equipment time to shut down or switch sources.
Telecommunications outage : An interruption of telephone, internet, or other communication services. Power loss can disable network equipment and make outage coordination harder.
Brownout : A sustained reduction in electrical voltage below its normal level. A brownout lowers voltage; a power outage interrupts service altogether.
