Power over Ethernet

Power over Ethernet (PoE) delivers electrical power and network data through the same Ethernet cable, allowing devices to operate without a separate power connection.

Power sourcing equipment: Equipment that supplies electrical power to a PoE network link. A PoE switch or injector acts as the source that places power onto the cable.
Ethernet: A family of wired networking technologies for local area networks. PoE adds power delivery to links that otherwise carry Ethernet data.
IP camera: A digital video camera that sends and receives data over an Internet Protocol network. PoE can power cameras mounted away from convenient electrical outlets.
Power over coaxial cable: A method of transmitting electrical power and data over coaxial cable. It combines power and data like PoE but uses coaxial rather than Ethernet cabling.
Structured cabling: A standardized building-wide system of cabling and connection points for communications networks. PoE extends the usefulness of installed Ethernet runs by letting them supply device power.
Powered device: A network device designed to receive electrical power through its Ethernet connection. It receives PoE from the sourcing equipment and uses it to operate.
Twisted pair: A cable design in which pairs of insulated conductors are twisted together to reduce interference. PoE commonly uses Ethernet cables built from multiple twisted pairs.
Wireless access point: A network device that connects Wi-Fi clients to a wired local area network. PoE simplifies ceiling or wall installation by carrying power over its network cable.
USB Power Delivery: A USB standard for negotiating power delivery between connected devices. It serves device-power needs over USB rather than an Ethernet network link.
Network switch: A device that connects devices within a computer network and forwards data between them. A PoE-capable switch can centralize both network connectivity and power delivery.
