Powered flight

Powered flight is aerial movement sustained by active wing motion that generates lift and thrust. It is used by birds, bats, insects, and some other animals.

Lift (force): Lift is the aerodynamic force perpendicular to a body's motion through a fluid. Powered flight requires lift to counter gravity and keep the animal airborne.
Wings: Wings are paired appendages that generate aerodynamic forces in animals or machines. Their shape and flexibility determine how flapping interacts with air.
Bird flight: Bird flight is powered aerial movement using feathered forelimbs as wings. Birds provide diverse examples, from soaring to rapid flapping flight.
Gliding: Gliding is descending or traveling through air without continuous propulsion, using lift to extend the path. Unlike powered flight, gliding spends height or momentum instead of continuously flapping.
Thrust: Thrust is a force that propels an object forward through a fluid or against a surface. Wing strokes can generate forward force as well as lift.
Feathers: Feathers are keratin structures that form bird plumage and provide insulation, display, and aerodynamic surfaces. Flight feathers shape the bird wing and help control airflow.
Bat flight: Bat flight is powered flight using wings formed by a membrane stretched across elongated fingers. The flexible membrane allows bats to reshape their wings during maneuvering.
Soaring (flight): Soaring is flight that gains or maintains altitude by exploiting rising air currents. Soaring can reduce active wingbeats, though it often alternates with powered flight.
Angle of attack: The angle of attack is the angle between a wing's reference line and the oncoming airflow. Changing it alters the lift and drag produced during a wing stroke.
Insect wing: An insect wing is a thin, often veined outgrowth of the thorax used in flight or display. Its structure differs from vertebrate wings but also produces forces through flapping.
