Knowra Powerlifting Powerlifting Powerlifting is a strength sport in which athletes compete to lift the heaviest possible weights in the squat, bench press, and deadlift, typically across three attempts per lift.
Squat (weightlifting) : A strength exercise in which a lifter bends the knees and hips under a loaded bar, then stands upright. The squat is the first of powerlifting’s three contested lifts.
Weight class : A competition division that groups athletes within a specified body-weight range. Powerlifters compete in weight classes so totals are compared among athletes of similar body mass.
Olympic weightlifting : A barbell sport contested in the snatch and the clean and jerk. Unlike powerlifting, it rewards explosive overhead lifts rather than squat, bench, and deadlift totals.
Physical culture : A movement promoting bodily training, health, and physical development, especially prominent from the nineteenth century onward. Powerlifting grew from earlier strength displays and physical-culture practices.
Periodization (weight training) : The planned variation of training volume and intensity over time to support performance and recovery. Powerlifters use it to build strength while preparing to peak for a meet.
Bench press : A strength exercise in which a lifter lowers a barbell to the chest and presses it upward while lying on a bench. It is powerlifting’s second contested lift, with rules governing body position and bar movement.
One-repetition maximum : The greatest load a person can lift once with a specified exercise and technique. A competition attempt tests near-maximal strength in one of the three lifts.
Strongman : A strength sport featuring varied events such as carries, pulls, and object lifts. Strongman tests strength across changing tasks, while powerlifting uses three standardized barbell lifts.
International Powerlifting Federation : An international governing body for powerlifting, founded in 1972. Its formation helped establish common rules and international competition.
Peaking (sports) : The planned process of reaching maximal performance near a competition date. A powerlifting program often reduces fatigue before a meet while retaining near-maximal strength.
