Poznań

Poznań is a city on the Warta River in western Poland and the capital of Greater Poland Voivodeship. It is one of Poland’s oldest cities and a major regional center.

Old Market Square, Poznań: Poznań’s historic central square, established in the thirteenth century and surrounded by townhouses and civic buildings. The square anchors the city’s historic center and its best-known civic architecture.
Mieszko I: The first historically documented ruler of Poland, who consolidated a polity in the tenth century. His rule is closely associated with the early political center on Ostrów Tumski.
Hanna Suchocka: A Polish lawyer and politician who served as prime minister from 1992 to 1993 and later as ambassador to the Holy See. She was born in Poznań and became one of Poland’s most prominent political figures.

Poznań Town Hall: A Renaissance civic building on Poznań’s Old Market Square, noted for its façade and mechanical goats. Its daily goat display has become one of the city’s most recognizable traditions.
Bolesław I the Brave: The first crowned king of Poland, ruling from 1025 until his death that year. His reign strengthened the early Polish polity centered partly in Poznań.
Hipolit Cegielski: A Polish teacher, industrialist, and public figure who founded a major Poznań manufacturing company in 1846. His enterprise made him a symbol of local industry and Polish economic self-organization.
Poznań University of Technology: A public technical university in Poznań offering engineering and applied-science education. Its research and graduates support the city’s industrial and technology sectors.
Warta: A major river in western Poland and a tributary of the Oder. The Warta crosses Poznań and shaped the location of its earliest settlement.
