Pre-Code Hollywood

Pre-Code Hollywood is the period in American cinema, roughly 1929–1934, before strict enforcement of the Motion Picture Production Code. Its films often treated sex, crime, corruption, and social conflict more openly than later studio productions.

Motion Picture Production Code: A set of moral guidelines adopted by American film studios in 1930 and strictly enforced from 1934. Its delayed enforcement defined the boundary between Pre-Code filmmaking and the later production era.
Baby Face: A 1933 Warner Bros. drama starring Barbara Stanwyck as a woman who advances through sexual relationships. Its original release version made sexual opportunism unusually explicit for a major studio film.

Production Code Administration: The Hollywood office that reviewed films for compliance with the Motion Picture Production Code. Its certification system replaced inconsistent studio self-regulation with centralized oversight.
Scarface: A 1932 gangster film directed by Howard Hawks and loosely based on Al Capone's criminal career. Its graphic violence and morally ambiguous treatment of gangsters drew censorship battles.
