Pre-Islamic Arabic poetry

Arabic poetry composed before the rise of Islam, preserved chiefly through oral transmission and later written collections. Its celebrated odes portray tribal life, desert landscapes, love, praise, and conflict.

Qasida: A long Arabic ode with a unified meter and a conventional sequence of themes. The qasida is the form most closely associated with the era’s celebrated odes.
Rajaz: A flexible Arabic meter used in verse, often suited to spontaneous composition and performance. Its adaptable rhythm helps explain poetry’s role in improvised speech and public occasions.
Imru' al-Qays: A pre-Islamic Arab poet traditionally regarded as one of the foremost authors of the Mu'allaqat. His famous ode helped define later ideas of the exemplary qasida.
Jahiliyyah: The conventional Arabic name for the period before Islam, especially as framed in Islamic historiography. The poetry is commonly classified by the historical period this term names.
Desert in Arabic literature: The desert as a setting and symbol in Arabic literary works. Desert landscapes structure the poems’ journeys, memories, and descriptions of loss.
Arabic prosody: The system of metrical patterns used to compose classical Arabic poetry. Its quantitative meters give the odes their formal structure.
