Knowra Pregabalin Pregabalin Pregabalin is a prescription medicine used for neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, and certain seizure disorders. It binds the α2δ subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels, reducing release of some excitatory neurotransmitters.
Voltage-gated calcium channel : A membrane protein that opens in response to voltage changes, allowing calcium ions to enter cells. Pregabalin binds an auxiliary subunit of these channels rather than blocking their pore.
Neuropathic pain : Pain caused by a lesion or disease affecting the somatosensory nervous system. Pregabalin is prescribed for several forms of this pain, including diabetic neuropathy.
Gabapentin : An anticonvulsant and analgesic that binds the α2δ subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels. It shares pregabalin’s target and indications but differs in absorption and dosing pharmacokinetics.
