Pregnancy

Pregnancy is the state in which an embryo or fetus develops in the uterus after conception. It involves coordinated changes in the pregnant person’s body and ends with birth or pregnancy loss.

Fertilization: The fusion of a sperm cell and an egg cell to form a zygote. It begins the developmental sequence that can establish a pregnancy.
Zygote: The single cell formed when sperm and egg unite. It is the first cellular stage following conception.
Prenatal care: Health care provided during pregnancy to monitor health and support pregnant person and fetus. Routine visits track pregnancy and address emerging health needs.
Childbirth: The process by which a baby is born, vaginally or by cesarean delivery. Birth is the most common endpoint of an ongoing pregnancy.
Pseudocyesis: A condition in which a person has pregnancy-like symptoms and believes they are pregnant without an actual pregnancy. It resembles pregnancy in symptoms but lacks an embryo or fetus.
Implantation: The attachment and embedding of an early embryo in the uterine lining. Successful implantation establishes contact with maternal tissue and supports continued development.
Embryo: An early developing human organism, conventionally described through the first eight weeks after fertilization. This is the developmental stage before the fetal period.
Pregnancy test: A test that detects human chorionic gonadotropin in urine or blood. It can identify pregnancy before many physical changes are apparent.
Miscarriage: The spontaneous loss of a pregnancy before fetal viability. It is a common form of pregnancy loss, especially early in gestation.
Chemical pregnancy: A very early pregnancy loss detected by hormone testing before an ultrasound can confirm a gestational sac. It shows how a pregnancy can begin and end before clinical imaging confirms it.
