Present value

Present value is the amount today equivalent to a future cash flow after accounting for the return available over time. It depends on the timing and risk of the cash flow and the discount rate.

Discounting: The process of converting future amounts into equivalent values at an earlier date using a discount rate. Present value is the result of discounting a future cash flow.
Time value of money: The principle that money available at different times can have different economic values. Present value quantifies this principle by expressing later money in today's terms.
Capital budgeting: The process of evaluating long-term investments in a business's assets and projects. Companies compare project costs with discounted expected benefits.
Future value: The value at a later date of money invested or deposited today, including accumulated returns. It moves money forward through time, opposite to present value's backward conversion.
Discount rate: The rate used to translate cash flows across time, reflecting required return, risk, or both. A higher discount rate lowers the present value of a fixed future amount.
Cash flow: A movement of money into or out of a person, organization, or investment over a period. Present value is calculated for specified future cash flows.
Bond valuation: The estimation of a bond's value from its promised payments and market conditions. A bond's price is the present value of its coupons and principal repayment.
Internal rate of return: The discount rate at which an investment's net present value equals zero. It solves for a rate given cash flows, rather than solving for value given a rate.
Compound interest: Interest calculated on both an initial amount and accumulated interest. Compounding moves value forward in time; present-value discounting reverses that calculation.
Opportunity cost: The value of the best alternative forgone when a choice is made. The return forgone by waiting helps determine the discount rate.
