Preslav Literary School

The Preslav Literary School was a medieval Bulgarian center of translation, writing, and manuscript production. It helped develop and spread the Cyrillic script after Bulgaria adopted Christianity.

First Bulgarian Empire: A medieval state that ruled much of the Balkans from the late seventh century until Byzantine conquest in 1018. The school flourished under this empire’s rulers and served its cultural and religious institutions.
Glagolitic script: The oldest known Slavic alphabet, devised by Constantine-Cyril in the ninth century. Early Bulgarian writers inherited Glagolitic texts and adapted their letter forms and conventions.

Ohrid Literary School: A medieval Slavic literary center associated with the disciples of Cyril and Methodius in the Bulgarian lands. Ohrid was a parallel center with its own role in spreading Slavic Christian writing.
Boris I of Bulgaria: The Bulgarian ruler who reigned from 852 to 889 and adopted Christianity for his state. His conversion and patronage created the conditions for Slavic Christian literary work.
Old Church Slavonic: The earliest attested Slavic literary language, first used in translations of Christian texts. It was the principal language of the school’s religious translations and literary production.
Naum of Preslav: A medieval Bulgarian cleric and writer associated with the early Slavic literary mission and Preslav. He helped establish Bulgarian literary and educational work after arriving from Moravia.
Cyrillic manuscript: A handwritten book or document composed using the Cyrillic script. Manuscripts preserve the texts and script practices associated with Preslav’s output.
Constantinople: The capital of the Byzantine Empire, later called Istanbul. It was the imperial and Greek-language center whose texts and learning Preslav writers translated.
