Pressure-sensitive adhesive

A pressure-sensitive adhesive forms a bond when pressed against a surface, without requiring heat, solvent evaporation, or chemical curing. It combines immediate tack with enough cohesion to resist separation.

Tack (adhesion): The ability of an adhesive to form a bond quickly under brief, light contact. Tack lets the adhesive grip a surface as soon as pressure brings them together.
Acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive: A pressure-sensitive adhesive whose principal polymer is an acrylic copolymer. Acrylic formulations offer adjustable tack and cohesion with strong aging and weather resistance.
Adhesive label: A label with an adhesive layer that bonds to a surface when applied. Pressure-sensitive adhesives let labels attach quickly without a separate activation step.
Contact adhesive: An adhesive applied to both surfaces that bonds when the coated surfaces are brought together, often after drying. Unlike pressure-sensitive adhesive, it commonly needs a waiting period before the surfaces meet.
Adhesive debonding: The controlled separation of an adhesive bond, often through a designed trigger or release mechanism. Debonding approaches could make pressure-sensitive products easier to remove or recycle.
Viscoelasticity: The property of a material that combines elastic deformation with time-dependent viscous flow. Pressure-sensitive adhesives must flow enough to wet surfaces yet recover enough to hold them.
Rubber-based pressure-sensitive adhesive: A pressure-sensitive adhesive based on natural or synthetic rubber, often blended with tackifying resins. Rubber formulations can provide high initial tack and strong bonding to low-energy surfaces.
Duct tape: A pressure-sensitive cloth-backed tape coated with a rubber-based adhesive. Its conformable backing and tacky adhesive suit quick repairs and temporary fastening.
Hot-melt adhesive: An adhesive applied in a molten state that bonds as it cools and solidifies. It needs heat for application, whereas pressure-sensitive adhesive bonds at ordinary conditions.
Adhesive residue: Material left on a surface after an adhesive is removed. Residue is a persistent trade-off in applications that need both durable bonding and clean removal.
