Pretext

A stated reason for an action that conceals the actual motive. A pretext may be partly true, but it misrepresents what chiefly motivates the action.

Deception: Communication or conduct intended to create a false belief. A pretext is a form of deception that disguises motive through a stated reason.
Pretextual stop: A police stop justified by a traffic or other minor violation but motivated by another investigative aim. It is a familiar legal example of a stated reason concealing an officer’s purpose.
Legitimate reason: A genuine and relevant explanation for an action. Unlike a pretext, it accurately represents the principal reason for acting.
Pretextual arrest: An arrest made under a stated legal basis while serving another, concealed purpose. Its legitimacy may turn on whether the declared basis masks an impermissible purpose.
Rationalization: An explanation that makes conduct seem reasonable, often obscuring less acceptable motives. A pretext can use plausible reasoning to make a hidden motive harder to detect.
Pretexting: A deceptive practice in which someone invents a scenario to obtain information or access. In social engineering, a pretext gives deception a believable setting and motive.
Alibi: Evidence or an account showing that a person was elsewhere when an event occurred. An alibi concerns location and possible responsibility, not a concealed motive for an action.
McDonnell Douglas burden-shifting framework: A legal method for evaluating circumstantial evidence of discrimination in certain employment cases. It provides a structured way to test whether an employer’s stated reason is pretextual.
Cover story: A fabricated or misleading account used to conceal an action or intention. A cover story supplies the narrative that makes a pretext credible.
Pretextual discrimination: Discrimination concealed behind a seemingly neutral explanation for an adverse decision. The stated reason may mask an unlawful motive in employment or other decisions.
